Julie Grosso: Abuse of elephants should bring criminal charges

Julie Grosso: Abuse of elephants should bring criminal charges.

Dear Editor: A video was recently released showing “Water for Elephants” movie star Tai the elephant stunned by electric shocks and hit with large metal hooks.

Gary Johnson, a founder of Have Trunk Will Travel, claimed: “Tai was never hit in any way at all.” I viewed the disturbing video filmed at the Have Trunk Will Travel facility. This video shows elephants including Tai being beaten with bull hooks and crying out when repeatedly shocked with electric hand-held stun guns. Any owner or manager of an elephant that engages in abusive behavior toward elephants should face criminal charges. How many more of these videos do we have to witness before we end the cruel practice of using animals for our entertainment?
